How much bleach for my water?

I have two 30 gallon barrels that I plan to store water in for the long term. How much bleach should I add?

You should also know that bleach degrades. It out-gasses fairly rapidly. Sodium hypochlorite is good for sanitizing initially. But, if you are looking for long-term storage, your water must be sterilized completely and sealed.

If there are any organics in the water, they will soak up the chlorine.

For longterm storage, I would consider over-dosing the water significantly. When you go to use it, chlorine can easily be boiled(heated or vented) off if there is any left.

If the water is sterile and the container is sterile, you really don't need chlorine so long as it stays sealed. Exposure to open air introduces dust-born bacteria.

These barrels are the type that comes from storing soda.
